Triple Bottom Line:
The Office of Business and Community Economic Development is being considered to provide technical assistance to emerging businesses in the Northside area. The Program Director in the Office for Business and Community Economic Development is taking a leadership role, on behalf of the University, in coordinating some minority business development in North Minneapolis. A proposal is before The Northwest Area Foundation to fund this initiative.
Career Laddering:
The city of Minneapolis has a highly successful employment and training program (METP) that prepares the unemployed for entry level jobs, often at relatively low wages. The City recognizes that the graduates of these programs will need to continue their education in order to prepare for jobs that allow them to prosper. The City is interested in incorporating a collegiate component into the City’s workforce development model. The model would create career ladders for the 2400 people who participate in the METP program each year. The University is also working with other educational entities in the area to create Career Ladders. Thus far, there are three models being tested—the Health Careers Institute, a Financial Careers Institute, and a Construction Careers Coalition. Two other ladders are being considered—Education and Law Enforcement.
