Kids on Campus

The Kids on Campus program brings elementary school students in grades K-8 to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities campus, in order to engage community youth in the life of the University and foster an interest in higher education. As University president Robert Bruininks noted upon the program's creation in 2006, "The goal is to provide learning opportunities to organized or established mentoring groups and to connect the U Kids on Campusin a much more vibrant way with the metropolitan community."

Kids on Campus focuses on bringing underserved and underrepresented students to campus. These students often include:

  • Youth with limited access and exposure to higher education
  • Youth of color
  • Youth in poverty
  • Youth from new immigrant communities
  • Youth who could become first generaton college students

Kids on Campus partners with K-8 schools and youth-serving organizations to create customized programming for each student group. Depending on students' age and interests, a Kids on Campus visit might include:

  • Speakers
  • Scavenger hunts
  • Lunch with students and faculty
  • Campus tours
  • Specialized learning activities
