All members of the University community and the public are invited to join the University of Minnesota for the annual "From Every Voice" concert commemorating Martin Luther King Day.
When the University of Minnesota's Martin Luther King Day concert began in 1980, it was the only tribute of its kind in Minnesota. The late Reginald Buckner, a professor in the School of Music and and an accomplished performer, composer, and educator, founded the concert and began a tradition of celebrating the life and accomplishments of Dr. King through the performing arts. Professor Buckner's death in 1989 left us without his personal dedication and artistic genius, but not without an inspiring legacy--the annual celebration we present each year.
The Martin Luther King concert is now a joint program of the University of Minnesota Office for Equity and Diversity and the School of Music.
The 2009 "From Every Voice" concert features Take 6, the award-winning a cappella group with a jazz and R&B sound that has won fans around the world. Take 6 has won 10 Grammy Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award, and two NAACP Image Award nominations. The group has collaborated with Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Don Henley, Ray Charles, Queen Latifah, and Quincy Jones, among many others.
